Hail Damage Repair
Hail bruising is usually invisible from the ground. We check the soft metals, the granule loss collecting in your gutters, and the shingle mat itself, and photograph all of it for your claim.
What This Covers
Hail damage is the hardest kind to see and the easiest to miss. A hail-bruised roof often looks completely normal from the driveway while the shingle mat has already been compromised, which is why it needs to be inspected up close rather than judged from the ground.
Signs You Need This Service
- Granules collecting in gutters and at the base of downspouts
- Circular bruises where granules have been knocked off the mat
- Dents in soft metals: vents, flashing, gutter aprons, window wraps
- Cracked or split tabs that no longer lie flat
Materials & Methods
- Impact-rated Class 4 shingles on replacement, which resist the next storm
- Matching soft metals so the repair is not obvious from the street
What to Expect
- 01Close inspection with a chalk test where the bruising is marginal
- 02Photographs of every hit, which is what carries a claim
- 03Adjuster meeting on the roof so nothing is written out of the scope
Hail Size and What It Does
| Roof Type | Lifespan | Common Issues | Repair Complexity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pea to marble, under 1 inch | Cosmetic | Granule loss on ageing roofs | Often not claimable on its own |
| Quarter to golf ball, 1 to 1.75 inch | Functional | Bruising, cracked mats, dented metals | The common claimable range here |
| Golf ball to tennis ball, 1.75 to 2.5 inch | Severe | Punctures, widespread bruising | Usually a full replacement |
| Over 2.5 inch | Catastrophic | Holes, broken decking, damaged siding | Replacement plus exterior work |
What it looks like
What hail actually does
Hail knocks granules off the mat and cracks tabs. Those bruises are what an adjuster needs to see, and they are almost impossible to judge from the ground.

Questions
Hail Damage Repair Questions
How can I tell if I have hail damage from the ground?
You often cannot, and that is the problem. Check gutters for loose granules and look for dents in soft metal like vents and downspouts. The shingle bruising itself needs a close look.
How long do I have to file a hail claim?
It varies by policy, but most carriers expect prompt reporting and many limit it to a year. If a storm went through, get it documented sooner rather than later.
Will filing a hail claim raise my premium?
Hail is generally treated as a weather event rather than fault, but policies differ. Worth asking your agent before you file, which is another reason to inspect first.
What is a chalk test?
Chalk rubbed across a suspect area makes bruising visible where it is marginal. It is how we show damage that is real but hard to photograph.
Are impact-rated shingles worth it here?
In central Oklahoma, usually yes. They resist bruising far better and most Oklahoma insurers discount the premium, which recovers part of the cost every year.
