Metal Roofing
Standing seam and exposed fastener systems built for wind, with a service life well beyond asphalt and better heat performance through an Oklahoma summer.
What This Covers
Metal costs more up front and lasts two to three times as long. It also sheds hail differently from asphalt: it dents rather than bruises and shatters, so a hail storm that would total an asphalt roof often leaves a metal roof cosmetically marked but functionally fine.

Metal Systems Compared
| Roof Type | Lifespan | Common Issues | Repair Complexity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standing seam | 40 to 70 years | Concealed fasteners, nothing to back out | Highest cost, longest service life |
| Exposed fastener | 25 to 40 years | Gaskets age, screws need attention | Lower cost, periodic maintenance |
| Metal shingle or shake | 30 to 50 years | Looks like asphalt or slate | Mid cost, residential appearance |
| Corrugated | 20 to 40 years | Utility appearance | Shops, barns and outbuildings |
What it looks like
Dents rather than shatters
Metal takes hail differently from asphalt. A storm that would total an asphalt roof often leaves metal cosmetically marked but functionally sound.

Questions
Metal Roofing Questions
Will a metal roof dent in hail?
It can, cosmetically. The important difference is that metal dents while asphalt bruises and cracks, so a storm that would total an asphalt roof often leaves metal functionally intact.
Is a metal roof loud in the rain?
Not over a solid deck with underlayment. The noise people remember comes from metal over open purlins on a barn, not a house.
Does a metal roof attract lightning?
No. Metal does not attract lightning, and if lightning does strike, a metal roof is non-combustible and spreads the current rather than igniting. This is the single most common worry we hear about metal, and it is a myth.
How much longer does metal last?
Two to three times an asphalt roof, which is where the higher up-front cost earns itself back.
What is the difference between standing seam and exposed fastener?
Standing seam hides its fasteners under the seam, so there is nothing to back out or leak. Exposed fastener is cheaper but the gaskets age and need attention.
Can metal go over my existing shingles?
Sometimes, but we usually advise against it. You inherit whatever is wrong with the deck underneath and you cannot see it again for forty years.
