How do I know if my attic is under-ventilated?
An upstairs that never cools in summer, an attic that feels like an oven, or frost on the underside of the decking in winter. Shingles ageing faster on one slope is another sign.
Is more exhaust vent always better?
No. Exhaust without matching intake at the soffit does very little, because there is nowhere for replacement air to come from. Intake is the half people skip.
Do powered attic fans help?
Sometimes, but a badly installed one pulls conditioned air out of the house. Passive ridge and soffit ventilation is usually the better answer here.
Will fixing ventilation lower my power bill?
It can help, but the bigger benefit is roof life. Trapped heat cooks shingles from underneath and takes years off a roof.
Can ventilation be corrected without replacing the roof?
Ridge vent normally means opening the ridge, so it is far cheaper done during a replacement. Soffit intake can often be improved on its own.
